ASA Plastic KLEMA 1.75 mm 1 kg White for 3D Printing Weather-Resistant Parts
ASA Plastic KLEMA 1.75 mm 1 kg White is a thermoplastic filament for FDM 3D printing of enclosures, mounts, functional parts, and other products intended for outdoor use. The material combines resistance to weather conditions, ultraviolet radiation, and elevated temperatures. Thanks to these properties, ASA is suitable for manufacturing parts that need to maintain their functional characteristics under changing environmental conditions.
Material Advantages
- Weather Resistance. ASA is suitable for manufacturing parts used outdoors and exposed to sunlight, rain, and changing weather conditions. This allows the material to be used for external enclosures, mounts, and other functional products.
- Impact Resistance. The material is suitable for manufacturing enclosures, covers, and other parts that may experience impact loads during use. The Izod impact strength is 7 kJ/m² for notched samples in the X-Y orientation.
- Heat Resistance. ASA can be used to manufacture parts that experience moderate heating during operation. The heat deflection temperature is 101 °C under a load of 0.45 MPa, which should be considered when selecting the material for products subjected to simultaneous temperature and mechanical loads.
- Machinability. Printed products can be sanded and polished for surface finishing and preparation for further use.
Features of Working with ASA
- Material Behavior During Printing. ASA is sensitive to sudden temperature changes during cooling, which can cause warping and cracking between layers. This is especially true for large parts with a wide base. Using a 3D printer with an enclosed chamber helps maintain a stable temperature around the model and reduces the risk of warping during printing.
- Chemical Processing and Joining of Parts. ASA dissolves in acetone, allowing separate printed components to be joined and composite structures to be created. Vapor treatment with acetone also allows for surface smoothing, reducing the visibility of layers. However, such treatment can alter the geometry of small elements, so it should be considered when manufacturing parts with precise mating surfaces.
- Strength of Finished Products. The mechanical characteristics of ASA parts depend on the model orientation and the direction of load application relative to the printed layers. When manufacturing functional products, it is important to consider the layer arrangement, as the strength of the part may vary in different directions.
- Emission of Volatile Substances. When heated, ASA may emit volatile organic compounds and ultrafine particles. It is recommended to use a closed 3D printer with proper ventilation or an air extraction and filtration system when working with the material.
3D Printing Features
For printing ASA, a textured PEI plate with applied glue is suitable for improving the adhesion of the first layer. Special attention should be paid to the platform temperature when manufacturing large parts with a wide base.
The nozzle temperature should be selected according to the printing speed: higher speed requires a higher temperature range. This is necessary to ensure sufficient melting of the material as it is fed through the nozzle.
Drying and Storage Recommendations
The recommended drying temperature for ASA is 80 °C. The drying duration should be determined based on the filament condition and the capabilities of the drying equipment.
To protect against moisture, store the filament in a sealed package or container with a desiccant. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight on the material during storage.
Before printing, ensure the filament is dry, especially if the spool has been in an open package for a long time.
Applications
- Automotive Components. External decorative trims, auxiliary equipment enclosures, and other non-load-bearing parts exposed to sunlight and atmospheric precipitation.
- Electronic Equipment Enclosures. External covers for sensors, measuring devices, and other instruments requiring material resistance to weather conditions.
- Garden and Household Equipment. Mounts, holders, decorative elements, and auxiliary components for outdoor use.
- Functional Prototypes. Experimental samples of enclosures, fastening elements, and other parts for design verification before manufacturing the final product.
