Why 3D Print Post-Processing Matters
The main goal of post-processing 3D printed items is to achieve that perfect, "retail-ready" look. Unfortunately, most consumer-grade 3D printing technologies result in visible layer lines, even when printed at high quality. While this may be acceptable for functional parts, it often isn't for decorative objects. This is where 3D print post-processing comes in.
Artistic designs and device housings often require professional post-processing to reach a flawless finish. Methods and Essential Materials
The key to achieving a smooth, beautiful finish is starting with high-quality 3D printing on reliable equipment using trusted materials. Poorly calibrated machines or low-grade plastic can cause ridges, delamination, or blobs that are extremely difficult (if not impossible) to fix. Our projects were printed using CreatBot 3D printers with PLA and PETG filaments.
As you may know from our previous article, there are many ways to treat different plastics—using dichloroethane for PLA, for instance, is a common practice. Beyond that, the process often involves putty, various grits of sandpaper, primer, varnish, and plastic-safe paint. Let's look at the details.
Processing a 3D Printed Groot
Our team is such a fan of *Guardians of the Galaxy* that we just had to add Baby Groot to our collection. To make the model look authentic, it required careful finishing and painting. Since it's a decorative piece, we chose eco-friendly and easy-to-use PLA filament.
The 3D model consisted of two parts (head and body) printed separately. After printing, we removed the supports and treated the surface with dichloroethane. We then applied a special plastic primer; without this, achieving an even, durable paint job is much more difficult.
We used standard acrylic paints, but for the base coat, we went with an aerosol spray paint for plastic. While many projects benefit from a matte or glossy varnish finish, we skipped it this time to maintain a slight roughness that mimics a "wooden" texture.
Processing PETG Parts
PETG is a strong, technical-grade material. For one client project that required a glass-smooth surface, we demonstrated that even tough materials can be perfected. We used standard body filler and hand-sanding to eliminate the layer lines and level the surface.
To achieve a uniform color, we again relied on primer and aerosol spray paint. Spray painting is the gold standard for an even finish; we only recommend brush painting for complex, artistic details. Once the paint dried, we sealed it with a clear coat. The final result looks just like a professionally manufactured plastic object.
