Biocompatible Photopolymer Resin V2 Formlabs Dental Model

Professional 3D SLA printers are some of the most versatile tools that can be found in dental laboratories and practices, and the key to their versatility is special photopolymers. Dental applications have different requirements – some need to be strong and durable, others need to be biocompatible for use in surgery, and some require a clear view of aesthetics.

One of the most in-demand materials by dentists has been resin for orthodontic models. High-precision models of crowns and bridges of the patient are used to verify final restorations before the procedure. Traditional gypsum tooth models are based on analog impressions of the patient's anatomy and require a labor-intensive manual process to create. Making these models digitally with 3D scanning can simplify and speed up the workflow, reducing costs.

The development of Formlabs Dental Model Resin for Formlabs Form 2 was a huge challenge. Printing a crown and bridge model is one of the most demanding dental applications, requiring accuracy below +/- 50 microns at the edges and contact points and +/- 100 microns across the arch. Expressed as a proportion, it represents a deviation of +/- 0.17 percent over a 60 mm arch.

Application of Dental Model Resin in Dentistry

Formlabs Dental Model resin, which has the same strength as gypsum that dentists have used for decades. Settings optimized for Dental Model are suitable only for dental programs, considering their smaller size and dense fields. 3D printing directly on the build platform has also been simplified, significantly saving printing time and labor during post-processing.

The results of our research convincingly show that printing with settings of 50 microns or 25 microns will yield clinically accurate models with minimal and global accuracy. Printing at 50 microns allows for sufficiently accurate models of crowns and bridges, while the most accurate setting of 25 microns yields results that significantly exceed all expectations!
