Black PC UltiMaker Filament for High-Strength Parts and Functional Prototypes

UltiMaker PC is a construction plastic for FDM printing, which, due to its high tensile strength up to 58.5 MPa and impact resistance, is used for manufacturing loaded components in various engineering fields. The filament belongs to polycarbonates—amorphous thermoplastics that combine increased impact toughness, rigidity, and the ability to withstand intense mechanical loads without cracking. The high glass transition temperature of the material up to 107.7 °C ensures the rigidity of the macromolecular structure, guaranteeing the preservation of geometric dimensions of parts in an operational environment with temperatures up to 105 °C.

Main Advantages of PC UltiMaker Plastic

  • High heat resistance and dimensional stability. The material withstands prolonged thermal exposure and retains its shape at temperatures up to 105 °C. This allows printed components to be used in close proximity to mechanism units, engines, or in hot workshops without the risk of thermal deformation or polymer softening during operation.
  • High mechanical failure threshold. The tensile strength indicator of 53.3–58.5 MPa elevates this material to the level of construction alloys, making it twice as strong as standard ABS. Thanks to the combination of such strength with high impact toughness, parts withstand strong impacts and vibrational loads without cracking or chipping under stress.
  • Fire-resistant characteristics. According to UL94 certification, when printed with a wall thickness of more than 1 mm and 100% infill density, the material can meet the V-2 fire resistance class. This confirms its ability to self-extinguish flames, which is critically important for the safety of technical units.
  • Low dielectric constant and insulating properties. According to testing under ASTM D150-11 standard, the material has a stable dielectric constant of 2.76 at a frequency of 1 MHz. This allows it to be used as an effective electrical insulator for printing relay housings, distribution boxes, and wiring brackets in instrumentation.

Technical Features of Working with the Material

  • Hygroscopicity and drying rules. Polycarbonate actively absorbs moisture, which spoils the plastic structure. Filament that has been left out of packaging is recommended to be dried at a temperature of 80 °C for 10–20 hours. Unpacked spools should be kept in airtight bags in a cool, dry, and sun-protected place.
  • Shrinkage and temperature regime. Due to the amorphous structure, polycarbonate is prone to thermal contraction during cooling. To prevent the edges of the part from deforming and the model from detaching from the surface, the build platform should be heated to 110 °C, a closed printing chamber should be used, and the area should be protected from drafts.
  • Dependence of strength on printing direction. The physical properties of the product differ depending on the orientation of the model and the direction of layer deposition on the platform. The tensile strength along the layers is 53.3–58.5 MPa, while the interlayer adhesion strength is lower—25.2–54.8 MPa. This is important to consider when slicing the part for future operational loads.
  • Features of filament feeding. Due to the high viscosity of the melt in the range of 260–280 °C, stable pushing of the 2.85 mm diameter filament requires reliable operation of the extruder mechanism. The optimal pressure balance in the hotend is achieved when using nozzles with a diameter of 0.4–0.6 mm.
