Comparing SLS with traditional technologies for manufacturing and prototyping:

• FDM printing uses plastic filament and strictly requires supports. Parts exhibit pronounced anisotropy (meaning they break easily along the layer lines).
• SLA printing works with liquid resin, providing high accuracy but requiring supports that leave marks upon removal. Parts can be fragile unless specialized engineering photopolymers are used.
• SLS printing: A high-precision laser sinters powder. Parts possess isotropic strength (equally strong in all directions) and a smooth matte surface finish, with no support structures needed at all, as the surrounding unsintered powder supports the part during printing.

Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) technology involves layer-by-layer melting and bonding of polymer powder micro-particles using a high-power laser beam.

Before each new layer is formed, a specialized roller or blade (recoater) applies a thin, even coat of powder across the build platform. The laser then sinters the material particles along the model's predefined contour. This process repeats layer-by-layer until the part is fully formed inside the build chamber.

The primary materials used in SLS technology are powders based on engineering polyamides (nylon), flexible elastomers, pure polypropylene, and reinforced composites.

SLS printers do not require supports because the unsintered powder inside the build chamber acts as a natural scaffolding for the part at every stage of the process.

Once printing is complete, the part is simply extracted from the powder block, and the excess powder is cleaned in a sifting station to be recycled for future print cycles.
