Formlabs Tough 1500 engineering Resin is certified for skin contact
Formlabs, a manufacturer of 3D printers and photopolymers, has announced that its Tough 1500 engineering Resin has been tested for skin contact safety in accordance with ISO 10993-1 and meets the following requirements:
ISO Standard | Description |
ISO 10993-5 | Non cytotoxic |
ISO 10993-10 | Non irritate |
ISO 10993-10 | Not a sensitizer |
Given the rigidity and flexibility properties of Tough 1500 photopolymer, this opens up a wide range of possibilities for the safe use of this material for 3D printing applications that come into prolonged contact with the skin.
Formlabs dental resins and Formlabs BioMed resins for clinical use are certified to the more stringent ISO 13485 standard, as they are used in the mouth and may come into contact with other mucous membranes. In contrast, Tough 1500 resin is only intended for local contact with the skin.
Tough 1500 Resin has performance characteristics that are more suitable for use in engineering, manufacturing, design, and education. That is, when the requirements for product characteristics and safety are determined by the manufacturer. The characteristics of Tough 1500 Resin meet many of the requirements for the production of consumer goods and wearable devices. Therefore, Formlabs has evaluated parts printed from this material for skin contact safety in response to growing customer demand.
Tough 1500 resin is skin safe according to ISO 10993. It will continue to be supported on all Formlabs SLA 3D printers: Form 2, Form 3, Form 3B, Form 3L, and Form 3BL. This makes Tough 1500 Resin the first skin-safe material available for the Form 3, Form 3B, and 3L.
Biocompatible workflow for Tough 1500
To ensure that your prints are certified for skin contact, you must strictly adhere to the recommended post-processing conditions for Tough 1500 Resin:
- After printing, rinse with isopropyl alcohol (IPA, ≥ 99%) in the Form Wash for 20 minutes or until completely clean. Make sure that the alcohol does not contain residues of other technical or standard resins.
- After washing, allow the parts to dry for at least 30 minutes.
- After drying, subject the parts to additional curing in the Form Cure polymerizer. Polymerization parameters: 60 minutes at 70 °C.
