IMT 304L 15–53 μm: Stainless Steel Powder for Printing Corrosion-Resistant Parts
IMT 304L — is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel, which is one of the most sought-after materials for 3D printing using the SLM (Selective Laser Melting) method. Due to its reduced carbon content, this alloy provides excellent corrosion resistance and high ductility, making it a versatile solution for producing functional prototypes and series parts of complex configurations.
The use of powder fraction 15–53 μm allows achieving high printing density and smooth surface of products, minimizing the need for intensive mechanical processing after completing the cycle in the metal printer chamber.
Material Technical Profile
Chemical Composition
According to the manufacturer's specification, the powder composition is strictly controlled to ensure a stable austenitic microstructure:
- Iron (Fe): base (Bal.) — ensures the structural integrity of the alloy.
- Chromium (Cr): 19.0% — creates a reliable passive film for protection against oxidation and corrosion.
- Nickel (Ni): 9.0% — stabilizes the austenitic phase, increasing the material's toughness and strength.
- Manganese (Mn): 2.0% — aids in deoxidation and improves wear resistance.
- Silicon (Si): 1.0% — enhances melt fluidity during laser sintering.
- Oxygen (O): ≤ 0.06% — strict control of gas content to prevent part porosity.
- Carbon (C): ≤ 0.03% — ultra-low content prevents chromium carbide precipitation, protecting against intergranular corrosion.
- Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.045%.
- Sulfur (S): ≤ 0.03%.
Advantages of 304L Alloy in Additive Manufacturing
The material has several characteristics that make it popular among engineer-printers:
- Excellent weldability: Low carbon content makes 304L ideal for the SLM process, significantly reducing the risk of internal stresses and microcracks.
- Resistance to aggressive environments: High chromium and nickel content allows parts to be used in contact with water, steam, and many chemical compounds.
- Hygiene: Smooth surface and oxidation resistance allow the alloy to be used in areas with high sanitary requirements.
Application Areas and Examples of Parts
Due to its physical and chemical properties, IMT 304L powder is used in the following industries:
- Food industry: Printing nozzles, mixers, conveyor line elements, and pump parts that come into direct contact with products.
- Chemical engineering: Manufacturing corrosion-resistant valves, fittings, and heat exchangers with complex internal channels.
- Medical equipment: Creating tool housings, holders, and laboratory equipment that require frequent sterilization.
- Architectural design: Production of artistic metal structures, furniture elements, and decor with complex lace shapes.
