Titanium alloy Ti6Al4V for laser metal melting
Frontier TC4 15-53 µm is a spherical powder material based on the titanium alloy Ti6Al4V, containing aluminium and vanadium as its main alloying elements. It is designed for metal 3D printing using SLM technology, which involves layer-by-layer laser melting of the powder. The particle size range is 15–53 µm. The material is used to produce structural components, brackets, housing elements and parts with complex geometry.
Key advantages of Frontier TC4
- Spherical particle shape. The powder has a spherical morphology, which makes it easier to spread across the build platform. This particle shape promotes even application of the powder layer during laser melting.
- Controlled particle size distribution. The particle size range of 15–53 µm is intended for layer-by-layer metal part forming processes. Matching the size range to the equipment requirements affects the stability of material feeding and layer formation.
- Alloyed titanium alloy. The material belongs to the Ti-Al-V system with an aluminium content of 5.5–6.5% and a vanadium content of 3.5–4.5%. The alloying elements determine the phase composition of the alloy and its behaviour during heat treatment.
- Manufacture of parts with complex geometry. SLM technology makes it possible to form components with internal channels, cavities and structural features that are difficult to produce by traditional machining. Geometric limitations depend on the equipment, part orientation and printing parameters.
- Use in functional prototyping. The powder is used to produce test samples and structural components. This makes it possible to verify the geometry, assembly and manufacturability of parts before series production.
Chemical composition and properties of the TC4 alloy
Frontier TC4 belongs to the titanium alloys of the Ti-Al-V system. The base of the material is titanium alloyed with aluminium and vanadium. The composition also limits the iron content.
Main components of the alloy:
- Titanium Ti. The main component of the alloy, which forms its metallic base.
- Aluminium Al. An alpha-stabilising element that influences the phase composition and strengthening of the titanium alloy.
- Vanadium V. A beta-stabilising element that influences phase transformations and the structure of the material.
- Iron Fe. A controlled impurity whose content is limited in order to comply with the specified chemical composition.
The melting point of the alloy is in the range of 1600–1660 °C. The density of the material is approximately 4.5 g/cm³. These values characterise the material itself, not the bulk density of the powder or the mechanical properties of printed parts.
Use of titanium powder in 3D printing
Frontier TC4 titanium powder is used in the additive manufacturing of metal components for industrial and research tasks. The main areas of application:
- Aviation industry. Production of lightweight brackets, mounting elements, connecting parts and components for unmanned aerial vehicles.
- Automotive industry. Production of structural elements, fasteners and test parts for verifying new designs.
- Robotics. Printing of housing components, brackets, mechanism elements and parts of robotic systems.
- Industrial engineering. Creation of functional prototypes, complex connecting elements and components of mechanical assemblies.
- Dental manufacturing. Production of experimental structures, including bars for implant systems, abutments and prosthesis frameworks. The use of finished products in clinical practice requires separate confirmation of compliance with the established requirements.
Compatibility with SLM technology
TC4 powder is designed for 3D printing by selective laser melting of metals. During the process, a laser sequentially melts specified areas of the powder layer in accordance with the digital model of the part. The size and shape of the particles affect the powder's ability to spread across the working surface. The spherical morphology reduces mechanical interlocking between particles, and the particle size distribution determines the conditions for forming the powder layer. To work with the material, it is necessary to check the permissible particle size range, the requirements for the powder system and the recommended processing modes of the specific 3D printer. The quality of finished products depends on the laser melting parameters, the protective atmosphere, the orientation of the parts, heat treatment and control of the production process.

Packaging and storage conditions
The weight of the Frontier TC4 powder is 10 kg. The material must be stored in a dry, cool and well-ventilated room, in a tightly closed container. After opening, the packaging must be closed carefully and kept upright to prevent the powder from spilling. The main requirements for handling the material:
- Avoid contact with moisture, strong acids, oxidising agents and halogens.
- Avoid heating, open flames and electrostatic discharges.
- Provide local exhaust ventilation in places where metal dust is generated.
- Use safety goggles, gloves, work clothing and protective equipment.
- Collect spilled material in a dry, clean and closed container, preventing the spread of dust.
Safety requirements must be observed during work.
