Dual Extrusion and Thermal Control in the Bambu Lab X2D 3D Printer

Bambu Lab X2D is a professional FDM 3D printer with a Dual-Nozzle dual extrusion system, active thermal chamber, and a working area of 256 × 256 × 260 mm. The combination of a hotend heated up to 300°C and a chamber with a temperature up to 65°C allows working with both standard and engineering materials. The device is designed for multicolor printing and creating complex parts using a separate support material. The main extruder operates on a PMSM servo motor with a closed-loop for precise control, and the Gear-and-Trigger quick nozzle change system provides quick switching between tools, reducing plastic waste during color changes. The printer supports working with AMS and AMS 2 Pro.

Features of Printing Units and Thermal Chamber

The X2D design has two separate nozzles. The main nozzle is used for primary printing and ensures maximum system performance. The auxiliary nozzle is intended for supplying a second color or support material. The use of two nozzles allows:

  • Printing parts in multiple colors.
  • Using special support materials, including water-soluble PVA.
  • Combining different types of plastics in one model.
  • Reducing waste volume or purges during material changes compared to printers with only one nozzle.

This architecture simplifies printing parts with complex geometry, internal cavities, and overhangs, ensuring a clean surface after support removal.

Extruder System

The main extruder is equipped with a synchronous PMSM servo motor with a closed loop. It controls the accuracy of plastic feed in real-time and promptly adjusts the material feed based on feedback system data. The auxiliary extruder uses a stepper motor and provides material feed through the second nozzle for multi-material or multicolor printing.

Active Heating Chamber

The printer has a closed chamber with forced heating. The stable high temperature inside the body prevents deformation and delamination of models when printing with high-shrinkage plastics and also improves layer adhesion.

Material Compatibility

Thanks to the hotend heated up to 300°C and the active thermal chamber, the printer works with most modern filaments.
