IMT MS1 15–53 µm: Powder of Maraging Steel for Manufacturing Tool Components
IMT MS1 — is a metallic powder of maraging steel, developed for 3D printing using SLM/LPBF technology. The material combines high strength (up to 2000 MPa) and fracture toughness. Due to its ability for thermal strengthening, this powder is used for creating molds with conformal cooling systems and high-load parts in aerospace and mechanical engineering.
Powder fraction 15–53 µm with a sphericity index of ≥ 85% ensures stable flowability (≤ 16 s/50g) and high bulk density.
Packaging: hermetic container 5 kg.
Technical Profile of the Material
Chemical Composition
The alloy composition is balanced to ensure a stable martensitic structure and effective aging:
- Iron (Fe): base (Bal.) — provides the structural backbone of the alloy.
- Nickel (Ni): 18.0% — the main element for forming a strong and ductile matrix.
- Cobalt (Co): 9.0% — increases strength and promotes uniform precipitation of strengthening phases.
- Molybdenum (Mo): 4.8% — enhances hardness and stability at elevated temperatures.
- Titanium (Ti): 0.7% — a key component for forming intermetallic compounds during aging.
- Aluminum (Al): 0.1%.
- Impurities: O (≤0.03%), C (≤0.03%), Mn (≤0.1%), Si (≤0.1%), S (≤0.01%), P (≤0.01%).
Physical and Mechanical Properties After Printing and Heat Treatment
The material acquires its final operational characteristics after completing the aging cycle:
- Hardness: 54–57 HRC.
- Tensile Strength: 2000 MPa.
- Yield Strength: 1980 MPa.
- Elongation: 5%.
- Polishing Quality: surface class SPI:B1 with roughness Ra ~0.01 µm; the number of gaps over 20 µm does not exceed 20 units per cm².

Advantages of Using MS1 in Additive Manufacturing
This metallic powder is a functional solution for complex engineering tasks:
- Conformal Cooling: printing internal channels of complex geometry allows reducing the casting cycle time by up to 30%.
- Dimensional Stability: minimal deformation of parts during heat treatment (aging).
- Operational Reliability: products withstand significant mechanical loads without plastic deformation.
- Consistent Processing: after printing, the part is suitable for mechanical processing, and high hardness is achieved after final aging.
Applications and Examples of Parts
The IMT MS1 powder is used for manufacturing components that require high strength:
- Tool Manufacturing: inserts, punches, and dies for pressure casting molds.
- Aerospace: brackets, axles, and other loaded nodes with high specific strength.
- Mechanical Engineering: wear-resistant transmission parts and complex fastening elements.
About the Manufacturer IMT
The company IMT (Intelligent Manufacturing Technology) is an international manufacturer of spherical metallic powders for 3D printing. The use of gas atomization technology allows the brand to produce materials with low oxygen content (≤ 300 ppm) and stable granulometric distribution. Each batch undergoes quality control, ensuring predictability of printing results.
