IMT CX 15–53 µm: Corrosion-resistant tool steel powder for mold manufacturing
IMT CX is a high-tech stainless tool steel specifically designed for 3D printing using SLM/LPBF methods. The alloy combines excellent corrosion resistance with the ability for significant strengthening through aging, making it indispensable for manufacturing precision molds and tools with complex internal cooling channels.
The use of powder fraction 15–53 µm ensures high precision in building small elements and excellent surface quality of finished products.
Material Technical Profile
Chemical Composition
Precise control of alloying elements content allows for a stable structure and high hardness after heat treatment:
- Iron (Fe): base (Bal.) — the basic component of the alloy.
- Chromium (Cr): 12.0% — provides high resistance to oxidation and corrosion.
- Nickel (Ni): 9.0% — contributes to structure formation and increases impact toughness.
- Aluminum (Al): 1.6% — a key element for dispersion strengthening (aging), which increases tool hardness.
- Molybdenum (Mo): 1.4% — enhances corrosion resistance and material strength.
- Manganese (Mn): 0.4%.
- Silicon (Si): 0.4%.
- Carbon (C): ≤ 0.05% — low content ensures excellent weldability during laser melting.
- Oxygen (O): ≤ 0.03%.
- Sulfur (S): ≤ 0.015%.
- Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.015%.
Advantages of CX Alloy in Additive Manufacturing
The material has unique characteristics for manufacturing industrial equipment:
- High corrosion resistance: molds and tools do not require additional protective coating when working in humid environments or with aggressive polymers.
- Dimensional stability: minimal deformations during heat treatment allow for parts with a high degree of precision.
- Conformal cooling: the ability to print complex internal channels that follow the shape of the part, significantly reducing the die-casting cycle and improving product quality.
Applications and Examples of Parts
Due to its properties, IMT CX is the optimal choice for the following industries:
- Plastic casting: manufacturing inserts and matrices for molds for casting complex technical products.
- Rubber production: creating molds resistant to chemical impact and wear.
- Food industry: printing units and parts of lines that require high hygiene, hardness, and oxidation resistance.
- Medical equipment: manufacturing tools and cases that operate in aggressive environments.
Packaging: hermetically sealed container 5 kg.
