For most engineering modeling, prototyping, and heavy-duty parts fabrication tasks, an FDM 3D printer is the optimal choice due to its wide range of materials, large build volume, and affordable cost per part.

FDM technology is the industry standard for producing functional enclosures, fixtures, and mechanical assemblies, as it allows you to print large parts using strong, wear-resistant plastics (nylon, polycarbonate, carbon composites) at minimal cost.

Key advantages of choosing an FDM printer for modeling:

• Large build volume: The build envelope of FDM printers is significantly larger than that of photopolymer alternatives, allowing you to print large parts in one piece without bonding.
• Material versatility and affordability: You can print with ultra-strong, flexible, or heat-resistant plastics on a single device, and the cost of a filament spool is much lower than photopolymer resins.
• Simple post-processing: Post-print FDM parts are ready to use immediately after support removal, without the need for alcohol washing and post-curing.

Photopolymer SLA printing is primarily chosen when extreme detail (up to 25 microns) and a perfectly smooth surface finish are required. At the same time, modern professional SLA printing (e.g., using Formlabs equipment) utilizes specialized engineering resins like Tough, Durable, or Rigid, producing parts that rival the strength and flexibility of molded plastics.

To accurately set up the first layer, it is necessary to calibrate the gap between the nozzle and the platform at the four corners using paper or a 0.1 mm feeler gauge.

Manual print bed calibration algorithm:

• Preheat the bed to 60 °C and the nozzle to 150 °C to offset the thermal expansion of the metals.
• Completely clean the nozzle tip of any remaining solidified plastic.
• Switch the printer to calibration mode (Bed leveling) or manually move the extruder to the corners of the bed.
• Place a clean sheet of A4 paper (80 g/m² density) under the nozzle and rotate the bed adjustment screws until the paper begins to pass with slight resistance (the nozzle should slightly scratch the paper but not tear it).
• Repeat the procedure for all corners at least twice to ensure uniform pressure.

Professional 3D printers from Bambu Lab excel due to fully automated calibration and print speeds up to 500 mm/s, whereas budget-friendly Creality devices require regular manual adjustments.

Open-frame 3D printers can successfully print with PLA filaments, PETG, and flexible TPU because they have an extremely low thermal shrinkage rate.

These filaments do not require a heated air envelope around the model. However, an open-frame printer is not suitable for materials sensitive to drafts, such as traditional ABS plastic or ASA; sudden ambient temperature drops in the room will cause layer delamination and model warping.

Signs of nozzle wear include a sudden drop in surface finish quality, uneven extrusion blobs, layer gaps, and physical enlargement of the nozzle orifice.

A standard brass nozzle is a consumable part that typically lasts 150 to 300 hours of printing with basic filaments. Keep an eye out for these warning signs:

• When extruded in free air, the plastic curls to the side or splutters rather than flowing straight down.
• The tip of the nozzle appears visibly shorter due to continuous micro-rubbing against the print bed.
• A large amount of stringing ("cobwebs") appears on the part walls, even with unchanged retraction settings.

If you plan to print with abrasive carbon fiber filament, or wood and metal composites, a standard brass nozzle will wear out in just a few hours. For these materials, make sure to install heavy-duty hardened steel nozzles, which can be purchased in the parts for 3D printer category.

To achieve maximum part strength, use a layer height between 0.2 and 0.24 mm (for a standard 0.4 mm nozzle) and a Gyroid infill pattern with a density of 25% to 40%.

While a thicker layer speeds up printing, it results in a smaller bonding area with the previous layer, which lowers the part's overall tensile strength. When fabricating load-bearing engineering components, it is best to choose a durable filament, increase the wall line count (perimeters) to 4–6 layers in your slicer settings, and print at a slightly higher nozzle temperature to ensure superior layer adhesion.
