Formlabs, the global leader in stereolithography 3D printing, has officially announced the launch of its most anticipated system yet — the Form Studio 1, alongside a next-generation material line, Alpha Resins. This is the manufacturer's first 3D printer engineered specifically for maximum accessibility without compromising signature print quality, reliability, or speed.

Great news for engineers, product designers, makers, and production teams: official pre-orders are now officially open!

Here is why Form Studio 1 sets a new benchmark in accessible professional resin 3D printing.

Safety Revolution: Safe to Use Wherever You Work

Historically, resin 3D printing was associated with toxic fumes, pungent odors, and the requirement for separate, heavily ventilated rooms. Form Studio 1 completely changes that:

  • UL GREENGUARD Gold Certified: low-odor Alpha Resins are the first on the market to achieve UL GREENGUARD Gold certification, certifying low VOC emissions during the printing process when printed on Form Studio 1 equipped with the VOC Extractor.
  • OECD 439 (Non-Skin Irritant): liquid resin scores as a non-skin irritant under OECD 439 guidelines, significantly reducing handling risks.
  • ISO 10993 (Long-Term Skin Contact): post-processed parts meet ISO 10993 requirements for long-term skin contact, making them ideal for prototyping wearables, smartwatches, fitness trackers, earbuds, and ergonomic consumer products.

Now, a high-precision MSLA printer can be operated safely right at your desk, design office, lab, or classroom.

Maximum Resin Compatibility: From Validated Simplicity to Complete Third-Party Freedom

One of the strongest advantages of Form Studio 1 is total material flexibility. The system removes proprietary restrictions:

  1. Formlabs Alpha Resins with Smart Cartridges: next-generation low-odor resins featuring automatic dispensing and automatic profile recognition for reliable plug-and-play printing.
  2. Validated Formlabs Resins: each material comes with validated print settings, tuned across hundreds of test parts to deliver turnkey dimensional accuracy and flawless repeatability.
  3. Print with Any Resin (Open Material Mode): branch out to third-party resins with no license fee and no hidden recurring charges. You have full freedom to experiment with specialized technical, ultra-rigid, flexible, castable, high-temperature, or budget photopolymers available on the open market.

Next-Generation Alpha Resins

Form Studio 1 launches with an all-new family of general-purpose Alpha Resins:

  • Alpha Fast Resin — designed for ultra-rapid iteration. Capable of print speeds up to 130 mm/hr, delivering prototypes in minutes or entire build volumes in less than 2 hours.
  • Alpha Model Resin — deep, fully matte, neutral finish capturing the finest crevices and surface details; perfect for primed painting and model making.
  • Alpha Clear Resin — exceptional optical clarity, smooth surfaces, and crisp details for transparent enclosures, fluidics, and see-through parts.
  • Alpha Black, Grey, and White Resin — rich matte color and crisp edge definition. Parts are presentation-ready right off the printer.

Engineered for Speed: Most Prints in Under 2 Hours

Form Studio 1 is powered by advanced MSLA (Masked Stereolithography) technology:

  • A custom lens array and 28 UV LEDs deliver a uniform, highly collimated 6 mW/cm² light field that cures resin quickly and evenly across the entire build area.
  • The flexible film resin tank with Release Texture V2 drastically reduces peel forces, enabling high-speed cycles without compromising fine surface quality.
  • Average print speed: 40 mm/hr (at 100 µm layer height).
  • Maximum print speed: up to 130 mm/hr (with Alpha Fast Resin).
  • Most functional prototypes finish in under 1–2 hours.

Precision Detail and Flawless Surface Quality

  • 35 µm XY resolution (30 µm pixel size) combined with finely tuned anti-aliasing captures crisp subpixel detail and smooth organic curves.
  • Light-touch supports leave smooth, clean contact points and peel away effortlessly by hand.
  • Every material profile is calibrated for dimensional accuracy, holding ±0.15% XY tolerance so multi-part assemblies fit together seamlessly as designed.

Learn to Print in 10 Minutes: A Seamless Workflow

Form Studio 1 is designed so that anyone can go from unboxing to their first finished part in a streamlined 5-step process:

  1. Select a Material: load a validated cartridge, and the printer automatically identifies the material profile.
  2. File Set Up in PreForm: import your 3D model into PreForm software. Automatic printability checks flag potential issues in real time and generate supports with a single click.
  3. Print & Monitor: insert the build platform and tank; automatic resin dispensing handles the rest. Smart sensors monitor resin level, temperature, and print forces, while the built-in camera lets you track progress via the Form Mobile App or Dashboard.
  4. Wash in Form Studio Wash+Cure: clean parts directly on or off the build platform. The quick-release flexible build platform pops parts free with a simple flex — no scraping required.
  5. Cure: remove light-touch supports by hand, place parts on the turntable, and run the automated cure cycle to achieve final mechanical and thermal properties.
