3D Printing Lamborghini Urus

Carbon has signed a partnership agreement with the luxury sports car manufacturer Lamborghini for the serial production of parts for the new Urus SUV. 3D printing the Lamborghini Urus is a unique and meticulously designed project.

Such a partnership is already delivering impressive results. The first production parts to be developed using Carbon Digital Light Synthesis technology include a clamp for the air duct and a new textured fuel tank cap. These parts will be used on the new Lamborghini Urus SUV, which was first introduced last year.

“Thanks to our partnership with Carbon, we are developing production tools that allow us to manufacture more durable products quickly and efficiently, while significantly reducing time-to-market. We expect a stable and successful partnership with Carbon,” said Stefan Gramse, Purchasing Director at Automobili Lamborghini SpA.

To produce parts using the Carbon platform, Lamborghini works closely with the Volkswagen Electronic Research Laboratory. This development process covers a large number of interior elements, assembled mirrors, and auxiliary components, with the ultimate goal of producing more durable and lightweight parts. Carbon Digital Light Synthesis technology, combined with numerous support services and processes, makes such customized mass production possible.

Carbon technology and workflow provide mass production of parts at an economical speed. Lamborghini used the patented Carbon EPX 82 epoxy resin—a material known for its high-pressure and temperature resistance, as well as impact strength—for the fuel tank cap and clamp.

“The automotive industry shows great potential in using digital fabrication for large-scale production. Our partnership with Lamborghini is an excellent example of the type of innovation you can achieve by combining design, technology, and engineering,” said Dr. Joseph DeSimone, CEO and co-founder of Carbon.
