German automotive engineering company EDAG, known for developing the bionically optimized Light Cocoon car, plans to develop a new future vehicle project using 3D printing. Together with manufacturing giant Bosch, they are working on creating the “Soulmate” — a 3D-printed concept car that will take the connection between driver and vehicle to a new level. The organizations officially presented the 3D-printed car with an attractive exterior and a “smart” interior at the Geneva Motor Show, held in Switzerland in March.

The idea for such a vehicle has been in engineers’ minds for a long time and was partially implemented in the Genesis concept in 2013. Everything in the Soulmate design is aimed at creating topologically optimized structures to demonstrate the immense potential of future automotive production, as the algorithmic design allows minimizing the car's parts configuration to only what is necessary.

The exterior of the concept car features a bionic-style frame architecture, lightweight and visually appealing. While the exterior certainly catches the eye, it is the interior that makes it truly unique. Thanks to systems developed by Bosch, the driver can fully integrate with the so-called “Internet of Things” concept.

The interior is centered around touchscreen displays surrounding the driver. These allow the user to perform a variety of tasks — from navigation to checking their daily schedule. With a simple touch or gesture, the driver can navigate and control the luxurious car. Soulmate also provides full access to online services and smartphone apps, turning the traditional idea of a vehicle into an integral part of your life.

The 3D-printed bionic, fabric-covered structure also allows the Soulmate to visually interact with both the driver and other road users. The glowing body, for example, can warn other drivers of potential hazards or traffic conditions. It also helps the driver perceive what is outside their field of vision. In the context of the dynamic shift toward digital technologies, EDAG and Bosch present a future where your car, via smartphone, becomes highly functional and capable of interacting with the world just like we do.
